What types of knee surgery do we perform?

A painful knee or cartilage problems can be assessed by the Consultant Knee Surgeons at the Oxford Clinic who can perform the whole range of knee operations including some of the most complex procedures that few private facilities are able to offer due to equipment and expertise including partial knee replacement and revision surgery.

Some of the more common conditions and treatments are listed below.

  • Knee arthroscopy – for diagnosis of unexplained pain in the knee joint, repair of torn cartilage (meniscus) and removal of loose bodies, bursitis.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction – for ruptured or torn anterior cruciate ligament ("ACL"), often caused by impact injuries when playing sport but also caused by ordinary wear and tear.
  • Posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction – while the symptoms are very similar to those of a ruptured ACL posterior cruciate ligament ("PCL") is a much less commonly performed procedure and can be caused by hyper extension of the knee.
  • Patellofemoral resurfacing – where osteoarthritis affecting only the patella ("kneecap") and front of the femur is causes pain and discomfort this type of procedure can be appropriate.
  • Partial  knee  replacement – for pain and  PKR implant                                                   or disability caused by osteoarthritic joint degeneration, deformity or other disease that is specific to only one side of the knee joint (usually the medial or inner side).                                                                                                                                                                                                              The image on the right shows an Oxford Partial Knee Replacement implant system.

  • Total knee replacement – for pain caused by osteoarthritic joint degeneration, deformity or other disease affecting both compartments (sides).
  • Revision knee replacement – repeat replacement of the same joint is a more complex operation requiring highly specialised equipment and expertise. Revision can be necessitated by infected or uninfected loosening or other failure of the original prosthesis. Sometimes all components may need to be revised but the tibial, femoral or other implant can be revised alone when only one part is affected
