General knee information
The knee is a hinge joint formed by the tibia (shinbone), femur (thighbone) and patella (kneecap). The tibia and femur are both divided in to medial (the half of the joint positioned on the inside part of the leg) and lateral (the half of the joint positioned on the outside part of the leg). The ends of the bones in the joint are covered with cartilage, a tough lubricating tissue that helps cushion the bones during movement.
The first knee replacement procedure was performed over thirty years ago. Since then, millions of people have received knee replacements. Knee replacement surgery is a routine procedure and is usually extremely successful. The term ‘replacement’ leads one to believe that surgeons remove the entire knee. In truth, the surgeon only resurfaces damaged cartilage found at the ends of the bones in the joints.
